When you consider all the layers of your daily experience as an integrated system, you begin to see clearly and feel better.
Befriend your body - it’s your home on this planet
Your body has been shaped by your experiences, emotions, thoughts and beliefs. When you learn to befriend your body and listen to your physical sensations you can connect with trauma held in your autonomic nervous system and learn to release and heal it. This is why somatic therapy takes a bottom up approach by engaging the body’s resources first and integrating conscious analysis second. There are some things you cannot think your way through, you need to dive deeper into the foundations of the body to soothe and love your way out.
Welcome all your emotions
Most of us have been taught that “negative emotions” such as anger, fear, anxiety, grief, sadness and despair are harmful and should be ignored, repressed and replaced. In reality, your negative emotions are alarm messages trying to bring your attention to an existing wound or a possible danger. They are a part of your nervous system. If you ignore them, they simply get louder. If you listen to them and understand their message, they diminish and transform. Somatic therapy uses mindfulness, kind gentle touch and talk therapy to help you connect to your emotions so that you can safely listen to them, understand their message and release them. From this calmer emotional place you can naturally make better decisions that enhance your well-being and happiness.
